The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation has announced that Christopher Kim, Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Chemistry, Schmid College of Science, has been selected as a Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar for 2010.
Dr. Kim, who is spending this year as a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University, is also principal investigator for the Environmental Geochemistry Lab at Chapman University.
“It’s particularly meaningful to me that the Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award recognizes accomplishment in both scholarly research with undergraduates and teaching. I feel that Chapman excels in encouraging and fostering exactly this combination of strengths in its faculty, which is one of the main reasons why I chose to be at an institution like Chapman,” Dr. Kim said. ”I should also say that this award really is more than anything else a reflection of the excellent research that the many students who have been members of my research group have conducted over the years.”
The Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program supports the research and teaching careers of talented young faculty in the chemical sciences. Based on institutional nominations, the program provides discretionary funding to faculty at an early stage in their careers. Honored faculty are chosen based on their accomplishment in scholarly research with undergraduates, as well as a compelling commitment to teaching. The program provides an unrestricted research grant of $60,000.
The foundation seeks Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholars who, as independent faculty members, have demonstrated leadership in original scholarly research of outstanding quality with undergraduates and excellence and dedication in undergraduate education.
The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, based in New York, is a leading non-profit organization devoted to the advancement of the chemical sciences. It was established in 1946 by chemist, inventor and businessman Camille Dreyfus.
