Chapman Assistant Professor of Computer Science Erik Linstead has recently been elected a Senior Member of the IEEE – the world’s largest professional association for the advancement of technology (pronounced “eye-triple-eee”). Only 8 percent of the some 400,000 IEEE members hold Senior Member status, which is the organization’s only level of elevated membership other than the highly prestigious IEEE Fellowship.

Starting out as an adjunct faculty member in 2003 – and also a Chapman graduate earning his Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science in 2001, Linstead is the first and only Chapman computer science professor to be elected as a Senior Member of IEEE. The status is in perpetuity.

To be eligible for IEEE Senior Membership, candidates must be engineers, scientists, educators, or technical executives; have been in professional practice for at least 10 years – some of which Linstead acquired through working in private sector aerospace industry; and must show significant performance over a period of at least five years in professional practice. As Senior Member, Linstead will be eligible to participate in leadership positions within IEEE.

“To be elected as Senior Member is an honor,” says Linstead. “It’s always satisfying to have one’s contributions to their field recognized by their peers.”

Linstead is also a senior member of the Association for Computing Machinery, and serves as the faculty advisor for Chapman’s ACM student chapter.

Linstead teaches a wide variety of computer science courses at the undergraduate level, including artificial intelligence, operating systems, algorithm analysis, and software engineering.  Among computer science undergrads he is most well known as the instructor for CPSC 350, a data structures course with a reputation for being rigorous and demanding. Linstead also teaches graduate courses for the new Computational Sciences program, where he provides expertise in data mining and machine learning.
