Welcome to the 2013-14 academic year and the revamped Schmid College of Science & Technology blog.  We hope you will continue to find this blog a good source of information about some of the amazing accomplishments of our students, faculty and alumni, both on campus and in the community. There is a lot to share.
The sciences
have undergone tremendous growth at Chapman in a short time. In 2006, Chapman awarded 164 science-related undergraduate and graduate degrees. In 2013,
the number had grown 66%
to 246, and 2013-14 promises to be another banner year as science students continue to gravitate toward our personalized, hands-on education model and opportunities to conduct original
undergraduate and graduate research
with faculty recognized in their fields.

The next few years are going to be particularly important ones for the sciences at Chapman, as we continue to expand our programs and facilities. Plans are underway for a new
Graduate Health Sciences Campus in Irvine
, scheduled to open its doors with the
physical therapy program
in 2014, followed by a
physician assistant
and
pharmacy
program in 2015. Our new
Center for Science & Technology
is scheduled to open in 2017. We look forward to sharing with you updates on these and other initiatives.

One of the best ways to keep up with Schmid College is to come to Chapman. A wonderful opportunity to do just that will be the weekend of October 4-6 for the annual “
Chapman Family Homecoming Celebration
.”  While the weekend will be full of activities on campus, including the traditional Homecoming
football game
(this year against Whittier College), I would particularly like to highlight a couple of Schmid events, including a
master class
on Friday, October 4, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. conducted by psychology professor
Dr. Dave Frederick
 entitled,

Is There a Body Image Crisis?  The Prevalence and Causes of Body Dissatisfaction,” followed by “
Dialogue with the Dean
,” from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.  In between those two events from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., we’ll host a reception where you can get to know fellow Schmid community members. All three activities will take place in Irvine Lecture Hall (Room 150). I hope you will be able to join us.

Again, welcome to a new academic year at Schmid College! If you have general questions, suggestions or comments, I encourage you to email them to
schmidcollege@chapman.edu
. I hope to see you on campus, if not for Homecoming, in the near future.

Best regards,

Janeen Hill
