Career Resources for STEM Students during COVID-19 Pandemic
Announced on May 11, 2020
This is a confusing and stressful time, especially for students who are looking for jobs after graduation or summer internships. Chapman’s Career and Professional Development team have put together a list of resources to help students who are navigating employment and internship opportunities in the midst of the global pandemic.
Handshake Resources
Handshake continues to be an important resource for students seeking employment. The Handshake team has put together a list of employers who are still hiring during the pandemic, along with a list of internships that are continuing to be held remotely. Continue to check Handshake on a regular basis, in order to see how different employers are changing their internships and what companies are continuing to recruit employees. Interim STEM Career Advisor Leanna Izen has also hand-curated a list of opportunities you can view here.
Interview Help
If you are still looking for an internship, the majority of employers actually are continuing with their (now remote) internship programs! This is great news for students, but also means that students should prepare for job interviews in a slightly different manner. Phone or Zoom interviews can feel very different than in-person interviews, so it is important to practice an interview to adapt to the format. CPD is continuing to hold mock interviews. You can make an appointment on Handshake here!
Remember to dress professionally and maintain a professional background (as much as you are able to) for the interview. Keep your background simple. Avoid grainy pictures or distracting objects in the background. You are still trying to make a positive first impression! Career and Professional Development services have more advice for general ways to prepare for virtual interviews, which you can find here.
Summer Opportunity Canceled?
Many students have found themselves in a position where summer internships have been canceled, and new opportunities might be scarce. We are working to assemble a list of alternative remote summer options to help with grad school preparation, professional development, or skill-based learning. Continue to check this page for updates as we find new resources for students!
