ourca2As a creative writing major at Chapman University, Robert Schumaker (‘17) actively participates in a number of creative endeavors, most recently serving as the editor-in-chief of Calliope, the university’s student art and literary magazine. Robert also writes poetry and has been practicing this craft seriously for the past three years, both in and out of classes. Because of his passion for the creative arts, especially poetry, one of the highlights of Robert’s Chapman University career was attending the Sigma Tau Delta International Conference in March 2016.

The Sigma Tau Delta International Conference is “a unique event that allows hundreds of members and sponsors from around the United States and beyond to gather in one locale, share experiences and expertise, be recognized for their achievements, and participate in the official proceedings of the Society.” Moreover, the convention provides participants with the opportunity to network with like-minded peers and discover “new ideas in English and English-related disciplines.” 1

However, traveling to a conference is not without costs. In order to fund his trip to Minneapolis, Robert contacted the Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity, where he was encouraged to apply for a travel grant. OURCA travel grants support travel for conference presentations of research and/or creative activity by undergraduate students and their faculty mentors. The grants cover travel, lodging, and conference registration fees.

With the help of OURCA, Robert presented and won third place in the Isabel Sparks President’s Award for Original Poetry. He’s now considering options for graduate work in creative writing.

Want to apply for a travel grant so that you can share your research or creative activity with an audience beyond campus? Visit OURCA’s website to get more information about and apply for funding opportunities available to Chapman University undergraduate students.
