On Thursday, May 17, Emilia Barreto Carvalho (’12) was the recipient of the 2012 Master of Arts in International Studies Outstanding Academic Achievement Award and Drew McNeil (’12) was the recipient of the 2012 Master of Arts in International Studies Outstanding Service Award.

Emilia has earned all As in her graduate coursework resulting in a GPA just under 4.0. During the 2011-2012 academic year, Emilia worked with Professor Kanavou as a research assistant. Through this position, she translated a survey from Portuguese to English and conducted Field Research in Brazil. In addition, Emilia and Professor Kanavou are working on several research papers to present at upcoming conferences.

Drew is Vice President of the International Studies Student Association, Vice President of Sigma Iota Rho: Honor Society for International Studies, and a member of the World Affairs Council Young Professionals International Network. In summer 2011, Drew studied intensive Arabic in Nasr City, Egypt. During the 2011-2012 academic year, Drew worked as a research assistant for Professor Woldemikael where he was instrumental to planning a conference at Chapman on immigration.
