What is LTI?

LTI stands for Learning Tools Interoperability

LTI in Canvas:

  • Reduces the time and development cost to connect Canvas with learning tools.
  • Provides seamless and secure access for students and teachers to the learning tools they regularly utilize.
  • Provides a streamlined way to create user accounts and grant access.
  • Reduces teacher workload by providing a way for tools to pass assignments and grades back to the teacher’s centralized gradebook.

What is LTI 1.3?

LTI 1.3 is an update to the prior model. It provides enhanced security and authentication.

Why is this important?

Many tools in Canvas are updating their integrations to the new LTI 1.3 standard.

Updates scheduled for end May, beginning of June in 2025 are Hypothesis, WW Norton, and zyBooks.
