AllPeople: an environmentally sustainable alternative Charlotte Cavanaugh-Kerr's Experience at her Remote HR Internship
August 5, 2021
Hello everyone! My name is Charlotte Cavanaugh-Kerr and I am a Communication Studies and Psychology double major. Over the course of Interterm I have had the pleasure of working at AllPeople, a company that offers products that are sustainable and environmentally friendly in hopes to promote other companies who have the same vision and goal! I found this opportunity through Handshake, and am so grateful that I was able to be connected to a company that holds the same values as me. During a time when we all are trying to be more conscious of our carbon footprint, it felt like it was meant to be when I found the job posting for this role!
I worked as one of the Human Resources Interns, and was in charge of interviewing and onboarding new interns, brainstorming ideas for company Town Hall meetings, and facilitating employee satisfaction interviews. I have been able to gain a better understanding of people, and what I want to do after I graduate! The reason I chose both of my majors is because I really enjoy learning about people, and in this role I was able to apply my passion for learning in a more professional setting.
Despite being fully virtual, I have really enjoyed working with this company because they have interns all around the globe. It has been so nice to be able to connect and network with so many different people, and I really enjoyed team calls when we all updated each other on the weather in our specific region of the world!
I think back to Group Communication, taught by my advisor Professor Bejerano, and I think this internship helped me apply what I learned in class to this role. I learned that I have the natural role of supporter, in that I tried to uphold a positive attitude and generally maintain a good attitude surrounding all meetings. Knowing that I unofficially hold this role helped me feel more confident jumping into team meetings, and ultimately enabled me to be a better member of whatever group meeting I was joining.
The most valuable thing I have learned in this position is that no matter how new you are to a role, you have an incredible impact on whatever group you join. Most of the interns were new, and a group of us were able to get together and come up with the idea of weekly check-ins for team leads, to make sure they were feeling supported during their projects. This idea has become something so fun to integrate, because we get to know our co-workers better, but also it helps everyone stay on the same page and keep the line of communication open!
This internship has been so amazing, and the people at AllPeople have really empowered me to feel comfortable sharing ideas and growing as a professional!
