Social Media Marketing Internship Sasha Bruce's Internship Experience at Greater Than Beauty Skincare
September 4, 2025
Hi! My name is Sasha Bruce, and I am a sophomore at Chapman University. I will be graduating in 2027 with a B.A. in Communication Studies and a minor in Leadership. I interned for Greater Than Beauty Skincare in the position of Social Media & Email Marketing.
I had trouble finding an internship off of Handshake or Indeed, so I thought it would be a good idea to ask my sorority, since it is filled with a plethora of smart and hardworking girls. A girl in my sorority responded, saying she interned for Greater Than Beauty and now works for them. She introduced me to the owners of the company, and I interviewed to take their Social Media & Email Marketing intern position.

My primary responsibilities in this internship were to create email campaigns for the products, create social media content for our pages, and manage posting. Within this, I used graphic design skills to formulate email campaign templates and researched marketing tactics to optimize consumer engagement. Additionally, I was responsible for our social media accounts, posting, writing captions, and researching virality to maximize our followers. I also did a lot of editing, filming videos, writing scripts for the videos, and photographing. We also had Content Days once a month in which we all met at the studio and filmed content for the month. I also participated in one of our photo shoots for the website.

My communication courses assisted me in my internship because I learned how to work well with others from Group Communication and Interpersonal Communication. I also learned about mass media and how to appeal to an audience from Mass Communication. I learned graphic design skills, how to navigate social media content production, editing skills, and how to work well with a team. This helps me in my classes because I know how to work well with others, stay organized, and get work done. I also believe learning specific skills, such as editing on Canva or iMovie, is a skill that I wouldn’t have learned if I hadn’t interned for Greater Than Beauty. Additionally, researching and applying tools from research about social media, search engine optimization, and building up a brand are things I wouldn’t have learned without this internship. I believe these skills will be extremely beneficial to me when pursuing a career in social media marketing.

A time I felt success in contributing to this company was when I made my first video to be posted on our social media accounts. I had never made a video campaign from scratch by myself before, and it took me a lot of time to navigate filming, writing the script, and editing. Coming up with an idea that attracts consumers and putting it into action was so rewarding. I remember feeling so proud of myself when the video was complete and posted on our social media accounts. The goal of my video was to increase our sales and consumer engagement. My bosses were pleased with my content, which encouraged me to keep creating. The most valuable thing I learned during my internship was how to put multiple people’s ideas into action in order to create the best possible campaign. I loved working with other people and bouncing off each other’s ideas. I believe this gave me interpersonal skills that can be used throughout my career.
A piece of advice I would give other students who might be interested in this field or working for this company is to trust your creative instincts. It may feel awkward or weary at first, but the more you create and trust yourself, the better the outcome will be. I got comfortable with producing content and knowing what works/looks best quickly, and I know you could too! At the end of the day, it’s so much fun, and I am so thankful I took this opportunity.
