Crean College Professor Mayngan Stone Receives Chapman Co-Teaching Award for Innovative CUSP Partnered Class
January 9, 2023
Annually, Chapman’s Faculty Development Council (FDC) and the Office of the Provost solicit proposals for co-taught classes of an innovative and interdisciplinary nature. We are excited to share that Crean College’s PA Professor Mayngan Stone and CUSP’s Kimberly Won have been selected for this prestigious teaching award!
The objective of these awards is to support faculty in innovation and interdisciplinary teaching that advances Chapman’s aim to provide students with a personalized education of distinction that leads to inquiring, ethical, and productive lives as global citizens.
Professors Kimberly Won and Mayngan Stone team-taught the innovative Interprofessional Emergency Medicine course that utilizes the clinical expertise of both pharmacy and physician assistant (PA) faculty to guide second-year pharmacy and first-year PA students through simulated interprofessional medical scenarios (SIMS) and clinical teaching debriefing discussions. This course not only provides pharmacy and PA students with an innovative, hands-on experience, but it also supports accreditation standards for both the PA and pharmacy programs, which require incorporation of IPE activities within the curriculum.
Students’ feedback from previous iterations of this Interprofessional Emergency Medicine course have been overwhelmingly positive. This course is truly a unique experience for both the students and faculty of the PA and pharmacy programs, as there are not many schools that provide an interprofessional, hands-on simulation-based course.
In addition, this course supports the 2010 WHO call-for-action to embed IPE and collaborative practice into health provider education to prepare “collaborative practice-ready” health professionals. We believe that this course has the potential to take interprofessional education in the PA and pharmacy literature to a new level and will promote Chapman University as a school that develops collaborative practice-ready health professionals.
Congratulations to both Professor Won and Professor Stone!
