Chapman’s American Celebration, Through the Eyes of Senior Colin Sommer
November 11, 2013
This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending Chapman University’s 32nd annual American Celebration. As a student worker in the Front Office of Dodge College, I have the opportunity to be included in many exciting events that the University organizes, as well as the chance to interact and network with many of the trustees and donors that make my education a reality. I was invited as a guest of Dean Bob Bassett, along with fellow students Kendall Taubin (CRPR ’14), Natalie Welch (CRPR ’17), and Bogart Avila (PRA ’15) to represent Dodge College at this exciting event.
Featuring over 100 student singers, dancers, and musicians, this two-night event features a broadway-style stage performance by some of the most talented students of Chapman, all to raise money for the University’s scholarship fund.
An audience of more than 700 watched as student entertainers dazzled with such performances as “Let Me Be Your Star”, “California Dreamin'”, and “Don’t Stop Believing”. Even Chapman’s very own President Doti, as well as friend of the University Julianne Argyros, joined the fun for a number entitled “Welcome to the Office of the President”.
The distinguished Hollywood Family of Lloyd, Jeff, and Beau Bridges were honored with the 2013 Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award. Suki and Randall McCardle were presented with the esteemed Citizens of the Year Award and Alumni in the Arts Award, celebrating their long-time relationship with the University.
Following the final performance on Saturday, the event moved to a tent built on Memorial Lawn for what could be described as the most elegant night of the year for the annual Gala dinner. With glittering chandeliers overhead and a band playing classic jazz in the center of the room, guests were treated to a delicious three course meal in the company of some of the most generous friends of the University.
American Celebration was created to raise funds for the Chapman Scholarship Fund, which has created more than $20 million in financial aid since its inception. With 80% of students receiving some form of gift aid from the University, the event is vital to the success of the University, and paves the way for Chapman’s best and most deserving students.
With amazing food, fabulous performances, and wonderful company, this event is sure to be one of the highlights of my time as a student at Chapman. I want to offer my sincere thanks to Dean Bob Bassett for allowing me to be a part of this spectacular night, as well as to all of our friends and trustees of the University for continuing to help Chapman prosper and grow.
