The College of Educational Studies celebrated its annual Honor’s Reception on May 20, 2011 with over 225 people in attendance. Our motto in the College of Educational Studies is Changing Education, Changing the World because we believe that we can change the world through education. In the field of education, our world is about children and the professionals who work with them. For us, the world changes by how we understand and view the work we do and the relationships we establish in classrooms every day; it changes by how we prepare future educators; and it changes by how we live our very own lives. So every year we recognize an individual who exemplifies the potential we have as educators to make a difference.
The 2011 CES Changing the World Award was presented to Dr. Sonia Nieto for her years of dedication to making a difference in multicultural education. Through her efforts to create an equitable, caring, and just world, Dr. Nieto has made her life’s work about celebrating and embracing the diversity that students and their families bring with them to schools. In addition, she has also been a champion for the teachers who teach the children, helping to prepare them for the important work they will do. She has also been the voice of the Latino community to create better opportunities through education. And, she has been a mentor to countless young scholars seeking to make their imprint in the world. Dr. Nieto is Professor Emeriti of Language, Literacy, and Culture, for the School of Education at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
The evening also included celebrating over 80 student accomplishment and scholarship awards totaling over $55,000 dollars from all CES programs (undergraduate, master and Ph.D. levels). Numerous donors were on hand to see their scholarship assistance received by the worthy and accomplished students of the CES.
