We’re excited to introduce Miriam Martinez, our Undergraduate Academic Advisor at Attallah College of Educational Studies! With a deep commitment to student success and a wealth of experience in higher education, our advisor is here to help you navigate your academic journey.

To help you get to know her better, we asked a few questions about their role and how they plan to support you in your studies. Here’s what Miriam Martinez had to say:

  1. Understanding the Community Educational Studies Major (and Minor):
The Community Educational Studies major and minor provide a unique perspective on education in both formal and informal settings. What three practical applications does this program offer to shape student’s careers?

The Community Educational Studies degree offers
students experience in the planning, managing, and providing of education, training, and related learning support servicesThese practical applications will give the students the knowledge and skills to
make a positive difference in the lives of children, youth, and adults.
  2. Guiding Future Educators in the Liberal Studies Major:
The Liberal Studies major is designed for students who aspire to become elementary school teachers, offering a comprehensive curriculum that covers diverse subjects like reading, math, and science. Graduates of this program are fully authorized to teach at the elementary level in California without needing to take the CBEST or CSET. What are three essential items you would recommend a current or prospective student prioritize as they approach this major?

I recommend that you follow your 4-year plan, as there are specific courses you will need to take that will satisfy both your GE and your Major requirementsI would also recommend highly considering the Integrated 4+1 program to obtain your master’s degree and credentials. Always contact your professors for assistance with the curriculum and meet with your Academic Advisor to review your Program Evaluation regularly to ensure you stay on track to Graduate.

  3. Exploring Interdisciplinary Opportunities:
Attallah College offers a variety of interdisciplinary minors that can add value to your primary major. What minors does Attallah College offer? Attallah College offers a variety of interdisciplinary minors such as Community Educational Studies, Elementary Education, Leadership Studies, STEM Education, and Secondary Education. These minors allow students to explore areas that complement their primary major and enhance their educational experience. By integrating theory with hands-on learning, these programs aim to develop well-rounded, ethical leaders and educators who are prepared to positively impact both in the classroom and the community. Each minor is designed to provide specialized knowledge and skills that support students’ diverse career goals in education and beyond.
