Although structures and approaches to K-12 schooling may be widely debated, one goal unites us all: we are committed to serving all students. We would like to invite you to a community event where you have an opportunity to become an agent of change during the inaugural Chapman Educational Roundtable on Excellent Schools: Meeting the Needs of Orange County’s Underserved Students and Families. It begins Thursday, December 8, 2016 with refreshments at 3:30 pm, followed by a panel and then roundtable discussion at 4 pm and a reception following at 6 pm on the Chapman University campus, Argyros Forum, Rooms 209 BC.

Gary Hart, former California State Senator and Secretary of Education, and current co-director of the California State University Institute for Education Reform at California State University Sacramento, will be interviewed by CES Dean Margaret Grogan and discuss the history of legislation on charter schools that he authored.

This will be followed by a panel discussion with leading educators, including Al Mijares, Orange County Superintendent of schools; Monique Daviss, Executive Director of El Sol Santa Ana Science and Arts Academy; Oliver Sicat, Chief Executive Officer of Ednovate; Heather Bosworth, Principal of Sycamore Elementary in Orange Unified; Padres Unidos volunteer Erika Perales-Medina and Moderator Mark Percy, Vice President of Strategic Relations for Kay Family Office. Gary Hart, Co-Director of The California State University Institute for Education Reform
Hart served in the California State Legislature as an assemblymember and senator for 20 years, representing Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. In his role as chairman of the Senate Education Committee (1983 to 1994), he wrote important education legislation concerning school finance, class Size reduction and charter schools.

Margaret Grogan, Dean of the College of Educational Studies, Chapman University
She taught in Australia and Tokyo before joining higher education, teaching educational leadership and policy at the University of Virginia and the University of Missouri-Columbia. She served as Dean of the School of Educational Studies at Claremont Graduate University from 2008-2012 before joining Chapman University.

Al Mijares, Orange County Superintendent of Schools
Mijares was appointed Orange County Superintendent of Schools in August 2012. He previously served six years as the Vice President of the College Board where he worked to expand the high school-to-university pipeline. He joined the College Board after serving as Superintendent of the Santa Ana Unified School District for more than 11 years.

Oliver Sicat, Chief Executive Officer of Ednovate
At Ednovate in Los Angeles, Sicat is responsible for overall leadership of the organization and the continuous development of their student-centered instructional model. He was named the 2006 Teacher of the Year in the Boston Public Schools. He later founded UIC College Prep, the #1 non-selective high school in Chicago.

Heather Bosworth, Principal
Bosworth has been an educator for 11 years and is the principal of Sycamore Elementary School in Orange. In 2016, the school was recognized as a California Gold Ribbon and Title 1 Academic Achievement award winner for the innovative partnerships she has formed within the community to improve teaching and learning for all students.

Monique Daviss, Executive Director, El Sol Santa Ana Science & Arts Academy
Founded in 2001, the dual-immersion charter school now has over 850 students enrolled in preschool through 8th grade. As one of the top-two performing schools in Santa Ana, El Sol has been named a Bright Spot Awardee by The White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, as well as the California Charter School of the Year.

Erika Perales-Medina, Padres Unidos Volunteer
Erika is an organizational change management consultant and a mother of two girls. She has been a volunteer with Padres Unidos, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating and empowering families, since its founding in 1996. She and her family have dedicated their lives to serving families because they believe that Successful Families Build Successful Communities.
