Each year, Chapman University honors alumni who have proven themselves to be exceptional in their accomplishments. As leaders in education, organizations and communities, the honorees represent the finest values and achievements of Chapman alumni, and serve as role models for students and others in our community. Attallah College of Educational Studies honored Dr. Jared T. Izumi (M.A. and Ed.S. ’16) as the Distinguished Alumni Award recipient during the 2022 Homecoming celebration luncheon. 

Dr. Izumi embodies the college’s mission of “changing education, changing the world” in his educational pursuits and research. After attending UC Berkeley for his undergraduate program, Dr. Izumi graduated from Chapman in 2016 with his M.A. in Educational Psychology and Ed.S. degree in School Psychology. 

He then entered the Ph.D. program at University of Missouri, graduating in 2020. Dr. Izumi is now an Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa, where his research focuses on early interventions for students to prevent future mental and behavioral health problems.  

While at Chapman, Dr. Izumi was recognized as a stand-out student who published with Chapman faculty and won an award for creating a mobile application that assisted families in supporting their children with autism. Dr. Izumi’s publications to date have appeared in top-tier journals including Learning Disability Quarterly, Journal of School Psychology, and School Psychology. In addition to his college teaching, his current projects include implementing universal screening, examining the effectiveness of a dialectical behavioral therapy-based social-emotional learning curriculum for high school students and using virtual reality to assess social-emotional learning skills in children and adolescents.
