Cybersecurity Awareness: Daylight Savings and Spring Break
February 28, 2025
As the CISO for Chapman University, I want to highlight the importance of cybersecurity during March. With daylight savings time and spring break upon us, these events bring a change of pace and new opportunities. Still, they also present unique cybersecurity challenges we must be vigilant about. Here’s why maintaining strong cybersecurity practices is crucial during this time:
- Adjusting to Daylight Savings Time: The shift in time can disrupt our routines, making it easier for cybercriminals to exploit any lapses in our vigilance. Be cautious of phishing scams that may take advantage of the confusion around daylight savings time. Always verify the source before clicking on any links or providing sensitive information.
- Spring Break Travels Spring break is a time for relaxation and travel, but it also means increased risks for cyber threats. Public Wi-Fi networks in airports, hotels, and cafes are convenient but can be risky. Avoid accessing sensitive information on these networks, and consider using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your internet connection.
- Device Security: Ensure all your devices, including smartphones, tablets, and laptops, are protected with strong passwords or biometric authentication. Keep your operating systems and applications up to date with the latest security patches to prevent vulnerabilities.
- Social Media Caution: While it’s tempting to share your spring break adventures on social media, be mindful of the information you post. Avoid sharing your location in real-time, and be cautious about the personal details you reveal. Cybercriminals can use this information to target you or your accounts. Additionally, consider turning off geotagging on your phone to prevent your location from being automatically shared with your posts. This can be done in your phone settings under privacy or location services.
- Monitoring Accounts: Regularly check your bank and credit card statements for suspicious activity. Set up alerts to notify you of any unusual transactions. Early detection is key to preventing significant damage from cyberattacks.
- Staying Informed: Keep yourself updated on the latest cybersecurity threats and best practices. Follow reputable sources and consider subscribing to cybersecurity newsletters or alerts.
By following these tips, you can enjoy a safe and relaxing spring break without compromising your cybersecurity. Remember, staying vigilant and proactive is the best defense against cyber threats.
Stay safe, stay vigilant!
