Celebrating Chapman’s First University Archivist and Mellon Fellowship Recipient, Annie Tang
April 5, 2022
The Leatherby Libraries is proud to announce that Annie Tang, Chair of Special Collections and Archives, is a recipient of The Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship for Diversity, Inclusion, and Culture Heritage. The Mellon Fellowship is “a six-year program that aims to advance multicultural collections through innovation and inclusive curatorial practice and leadership.” One of the most competitive fellowships in the special collections and archives field, only 15 finalists are chosen per application cycle. Annie is part of the 2022-2024 cohort of professionals, the last group to complete this program.
In addition to the Mellon Fellowship, Annie has become the first University Archivist in Chapman University history! Annie had this to say, “It is an honor to be the first University Archivist for Chapman University. As a woman of color, the child of working-class immigrants, and a first-generation college graduate, I keenly feel the legacy I am to leave behind to those who come after me. I promise to care-take Chapman’s physical and intellectual history–and the history of our Chapman community members from all backgrounds–for generations to come.”
Associate Dean Julie Artman shared that “Annie is a valued colleague and inspiring archivist who engages with the Chapman community by creating and offering opportunities for us all to share and learn. During the height of the pandemic, Annie established the Quarantine Diaries archive, inviting students, faculty, and staff to contribute. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Japanese-American Incarceration Memory Project, she has amplified underserved archives by working with our Japanese-American history collections from the Frank Mt. Pleasant Library of Special Collections & Archives.”
Congratulations to Annie on this accomplishment! Additionally, a special thanks to the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for recognizing and supporting Annie!
The Leatherby Libraries’ Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts is in alignment with the Chapman University Strategic Plan for Diversity & Inclusion, fostering a diverse and inclusive campus climate.
