Why Do You Need an ORCID Now? Secure and Manage Your Scholarly Identity
August 8, 2024
ORCID, which stands for Open Researcher and Contributor ID, is a free, unique, persistent identifier (PID) for individuals to use as they engage in research, scholarship, and innovation activities. ORCID allows researchers to distinguish themselves from others with the same or similar names and links research activities and outputs to these identifiers so others can tell who conducted that work. This system helps prevent author confusion, maintains an author’s record, and simplifies reporting and analysis.
ORCID is an independent non-profit organization that provides a persistent identifier – an ORCID ID – that distinguishes you from other researchers and a mechanism for linking your research outputs and activities to your ID. ORCID is integrated into many systems used by publishers, funders, institutions, and other research-related services.

Why ORCID?
You may have heard of ORCID but don’t know what they are for or how to create one. This post explains why you need one, how to sign up, and how ORCID identifiers are being used by organizations, publishers, and funding organizations. Many publishers now require authors to use an ORCID identifier.
Nine things you need to know about ORCID right now
- Protect Your Unique Scholarly Identity: If your name is common or you publish under multiple names, an ORCID ID ensures you get proper credit for your work.
- Easy Tracking: Manage all your research outputs in one place, streamlining your flow.
- Control and Privacy: You decide what information in your ORCID profile is shared (see ORCID’s privacy policy).
- Comprehensive Integration: ORCID integrates with numerous organizations and publishers, including the American Geophysical Union, American Physical Society, and CERN (see a complete list of integrators).
- Simple Registration: Creating an ORCID takes just 30 seconds.
- Long-Lasting: Your ORCID lasts longer than your email address, providing a persistent digital identity.
- Diverse Support: ORCID supports 37 types of “works,” from articles to dance performances.
- Universal Glue: ORCID connects all your research services, making scholarship more efficient and interconnected.
- Community-Driven: ORCID is open-source, open data, and community-driven.
