The Leatherby Libraries is pleased to announce our upcoming two-part workshop series, which offers a hands-on introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) using the industry-standard ArcGIS Pro software. This workshop series is designed for beginners eager to learn the fundamentals of GIS, seeking practical, hands-on training in ArcGIS Pro software. Whether you are a student, staff member, or faculty member, this series will provide valuable insights into the exciting capabilities of GIS technology.

Maps and Geographic Information Systems (MAGIC) is a field of geography where researchers collect, analyze, and visualize spatial data to generate insights about the world around us. Researchers, land-use planners, and scientists utilize GIS to gain a deeper understanding of physical regions and create more valuable maps and navigational products. Workshop Overview

Workshop 1: Maps, Data, and MAGIC: The World of GIS

Thursday, October 30, 2025 — 12:00 – 1:00 PM

Hybrid (Online/Library Instruction Room LL305)

RSVP Here

In the first workshop, participants will learn the basics of GIS concepts and explore the ArcGIS Pro interface. You will learn how to navigate the software, visualize spatial data, and design professional map layouts through hands-on practice with real-world datasets. Participants should download ArcGIS Pro onto their Windows computer before the workshop, or they may use the classroom computers to access the software during the workshop.

Workshop 2: Layers of Insight: Analyzing the World with ArcGIS Pro Tools

Thursday, November 6, 2025 — 12:00 – 1:00 PM

Hybrid (Online/Library Instruction Room LL305)

RSVP Here

Building upon the foundation of the first workshop, the second workshop dives deeper into spatial analysis. You will learn to find mapping datasets, view and edit map attributes, and utilize ArcGIS Pro’s geoprocessing tools to interpret spatial data for research, planning, or business needs.

Access to ArcGIS Software at Chapman

Chapman University provides all students, faculty, and staff access to a full suite of ArcGIS licensed products on Windows PC through IS&T’s site license. ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, and many more powerful tools can support coursework, research, or personal learning. ArcGIS Pro is only available for Windows PCs; however, computers are available in the classroom for participants to access the software during the workshop. Contact the Information Systems & Technology Department for any software installation issues.
