Every year, pharmacy schools from across the nation gather at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting and Exhibition for educational programming, national posters, and presentations, and to be a part of one of the largest pharmaceutical conferences in the world.

Chapman Pharmacy faculty and students triumphed (yet again) in all aspects of the conference, both presenting and postering research on the national stage, tabling alongside our exceptional preceptors, and participating in some friendly competition against other pharmacy schools.

CSHP clinical skills championing pair Mason Myers (Pharm.D. ’23) and Mary Elkomos (Pharm.D. ’23) competed among 138 pharmacy schools and placed within the top 12% among participants. While ASHP has only announced the official placements for the top 10 performers, Mason Myers calculated the statistics given and has concluded that the pair placed either 16th, 15th, or 14th place (Math is available at the bottom of this article).

Dr. Jerika Lam co-presented and moderated a national presentation cleverly titled “PrEParing for a New Kind of HIV Prevention” with an audience of over 200 people. Dr. Jerika Lam discussed her findings in improved risk assessment strategies for effective patient treatments, including new findings on PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis).

The conference was truly more than a meeting. Current students and faculty participated in discussions, presentations, and workshops discussing DEI, innovation, and trending topics like COVID-19 and the future of opioid as the topics fits within the pharmaceutical industry. More highlights included:

  • Pharm.D. candidates Chelsea Pan (’23) and Helen Vu (’24) presented a national poster highlighting the 2022 accomplishments of CUSP’s CSHP/ASHP-SSHP chapter.
  • 50 students attended the largest annual pharmaceutical recruitment event in the world.
  • Alumni broke the standing record of turn-out to a Chapman Pharmacy exclusive reception, for the second time in one year!
  • Chapman Pharmacy’s students further networked for residency opportunities with our fantastic preceptors, including Cedars-Sinai Medical Network, Scan, and Providence.
