Announcing the 2016-17 Schmid Student Leadership Council
June 1, 2016
Schmid College is pleased to announce the 2016-17 Schmid Student Leadership Council (SSLC)! The SSLC is a select group of Schmid College undergraduate and graduate students who serve as leaders and ambassadors for Schmid College of Science and Technology, as well as advisors to the Dean’s office and the faculty of Schmid College.
“This is an impressive group of students who are passionate, dedicated, and committed to the goals and excellence of the undergraduate and graduate programs in Schmid College of Science and Technology,” wrote Andrew Lyon, dean of Schmid College of Science and Technology.
You will see SSLC members representing Schmid College at various events such as new student orientations, Discover Chapman Day, Preview Day, graduate program fairs, Dean’s Advisory Council meetings, and guest lectures. They are also involved in fostering student connections within the Schmid College community. During the course of the year, the SSLC and Dean’s Leadership Cabinet, consisting on Schmid College associate and assistant deans, heads of faculty, program directors and dean’s office staff, also work as a team to accomplish goals for the college they define together.
“I think the SSLC is Great! It epitomizes Chapman’s drive to continually improve… I welcomed the many networking opportunities SSLC provided. It was very exciting to attend the Dean’s Advisory [Council] meeting and … see collaboration between so many different industries and academia.” enthused returning member and computational and data sciences PHD student Kayleigh Hyde.
“Being able to meet with the dean of the school… is both terrifying but also an amazing opportunity. Being able to provide [Dean Lyon] feedback monthly really shows his connection to the student population and really gives me hope that our faculty is trying to provide us the best possible education,” wrote John Green, who served on the 2016-15 SSLC and is looking forward to doing so again in the 2016-17 academic year.
College initiatives that came from the 2015-16 Council include the @ChapmanSciences Instagram (are you following it yet?), 24-hour study spaces for science students during midterms and finals- and many other projects currently in development.
