Today, a question came up regarding images for the new website.  Here is a follow up email from Chris.

I spoke with several different people here about why we generally recommend jpgs for pictures. (Strictly speaking, you can upload practically anything into Cascade, so it’s not a technical limitation, it’s just a recommendation.)

Overall, for photographs, the consensus is jpgs will give you the best web picture quality at the smallest image size.

  • TIFs are usually used for print and their file sizes are too big.
  • GIFs are mainly used if the image has text in it (i.e. if you’re creating a navigation button). GIFs have fewer colors in them than JPGs, as Cara hinted it. GIFs for photos can appear ‘funky’ or pixelated. Most cameras initially save pictures as jpgs, and saving them out as GIFs often loses something in the conversion process.
  • PNGs are better than GIFs, but don’t render as well on many phones, and are still not as good as JPGs.

Again, Cascade lets you upload other kinds of files to it, so this is more ‘guidance’ than anything else.
