Benjamen Janey, an Executive MBA (EMBA) student at Chapman University’s Argyros College of Business and Economics, is set to graduate in Spring 2025. A seasoned entrepreneur and innovative leader, Janey exemplifies the transformative power of education and determination. Reflecting on his journey, Janey described his Chapman experience as “exceptional,” emphasizing how the EMBA program has helped shape his skills and broaden his professional horizons.
“The EMBA program has challenged me and propelled my growth as a business executive,” he shared. Janey appreciates the small class sizes and the wealth of knowledge that Chapman faculty bring to the classroom. “The professors and faculty at Chapman are exceptional. It’s clear the university goes to great lengths to recruit the best scholars and academic leaders in the field,” he said. This supportive and high-caliber academic environment has helped Janey refine his leadership abilities and prepare for new challenges in the global business arena.
A Champion of Innovation and Campus Involvement
Janey’s involvement on campus extends far beyond academics. In a relatively short time, he has taken on several impactful roles, showcasing his dedication to community engagement and innovation. At the Leatherby Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Ethics, he serves as an Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR), mentoring students and sharing insights from his extensive professional experience.
One of his proudest accomplishments is founding and executive producing the Insert^Innovation Podcast, a platform that explores topics related to entrepreneurship and innovation. The podcast, which films monthly, has hosted a variety of distinguished guests, including renowned sports agent Leigh Steinberg. “Leigh has represented over 300 professional athletes, including Patrick Mahomes and Troy Aikman. Interviewing someone of his caliber was a career highlight,” Janey said.
In addition to his work at the Leatherby Center, Janey is an active participant in the Black Resource Center and the Black Graduate Student Association. These organizations have allowed him to foster a sense of community and inclusivity on campus. “Being part of these groups has been incredibly rewarding. They provide spaces for connection, support, and growth,” he explained.
Choosing Chapman: A Journey of Resilience and Determination
Janey’s path to Chapman University is a testament to his resilience and determination. After leaving his undergraduate studies during his junior year due to the loss of his mother, Janey launched a successful entrepreneurial career. Years later, he decided to complete his degree, earning a BFA in Studio of Interrelated Media from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2022.
When considering advanced degree programs, Janey faced a difficult choice between three prestigious schools: Massachusetts College of Art and Design’s Master of Design Innovation program, Regent University’s MA in Organizational Leadership, and Chapman’s EMBA program. Ultimately, Chapman emerged as the perfect fit. “Chapman’s strong ranking, its focus on developing future global business leaders, and the Fellowship Scholarship I received based on merit and professional accomplishments made the decision clear,” Janey explained.
Transformative Academic and Global Experiences
Chapman’s EMBA program has provided Janey with transformative academic experiences, including hands-on learning opportunities abroad. One standout moment was taking Learning Global Business Environments with Professor Robert Koepp, a course that involved traveling to Southeast Asia. “We visited Bangkok, Thailand, and Seoul, South Korea, where I developed analytical skills to assess globalization processes and integrate that knowledge into value-creation strategies for global organizations,” Janey shared.
This experience not only enhanced his understanding of international business but also deepened his appreciation for diverse cultures and markets. “The trip was truly transformative. It gave me a global perspective that I now incorporate into my professional endeavors,” he said.
Launching Initiatives and Giving Back
Janey’s entrepreneurial spirit has fueled several successful initiatives at Chapman. In 2023, he launched the Insert^Innovation Podcast, which quickly became a flagship project for the Leatherby Center. Additionally, he spearheaded a new merchandise program in collaboration with his company, Spooler.co, and the Leatherby Center. The initiative, launched in Fall 2024, serves as a fundraising effort for the center and the student-run CEO Club, with a percentage of proceeds supporting these organizations.
Janey has also had the honor of co-hosting a fireside chat with successful alumnus and serial entrepreneur Alex Jekowsky during Chapman’s Homecoming celebration. “It was an incredible experience to share the stage with Alex and kick off such a highly anticipated event,” Janey said.
For students seeking internships and job opportunities, Janey emphasizes the importance of networking and staying proactive. “Keep an eye on your inbox for work opportunities on campus. Career Services is an excellent resource, and you never know when you might meet your next big client or collaborator,” he advised.
Looking Ahead: Private Equity and Long-Term Goals
Janey’s long-term career goal is to transition into a full-time investor, focusing on private equity. His time at Chapman has equipped him with the skills and experiences necessary to achieve this ambition. “From a core skill perspective, I’ve developed practical knowledge in accounting, finance, project management, and operations. On a broader level, I’ve gained a deep understanding of how global organizations operate and how to apply that knowledge to grow my own ventures,” he explained.
Favorite Chapman Memories
Among his many memorable experiences at Chapman, one stands out: a food and wine pairing in Thailand with his EMBA classmates. “The food, the ambiance, and the camaraderie made it an unforgettable evening,” Janey recalled.
As he continues his journey, Benjamen Janey exemplifies the qualities of a visionary leader, inspiring the Chapman community with his dedication to innovation, education, and making a lasting impact in the business world.
