Katie Bell (SCC ’17) is an Assistant Sports Information Director and Recreation Sports Manager at Chapman University. Below, she shares information about her position and advice for current students.
Can you describe your current position?
As an assistant sports information director and recreation sports manager I manage all recreational and intramural sports on campus. Also I am in charge of managing all of Chapman Athletics social media content. Additionally, I am in charge of game management, which includes setting up the press box, managing the table, and inputting live statistics for all sports. On my job I am also involved in media relations for the University’s athletics program as I am involved in writing and producing all post-game content on the universities website.
What type of work or internship experience did you have while in school?
As a senior, I interned in the office I currently work in. They then brought me on part-time, and a few months after graduating I became full-time.
Did your Chapman University education benefit your career?
The personalized approach of the School of Communication is unparalleled. Not only did I learn about communication-the relationships I built at Chapman helped me get to where I am today.
Any advice for current Chapman University students?
Take advantage of all that Chapman has to offer. Go to office hours. Go to networking events. Get to know your professors. If there is one thing I learned, it is that you can create some incredible relationships if you put in the effort. The professors in the School of Communication truly care about you as a person, so ask questions and learn from their experiences.
