Shaping Young Minds Lexi Torres' Internship Experience at Holy Nativity School
February 11, 2026
Hi! My name is Lexi Torres, and I am a junior majoring in Communication Studies, graduating in Fall 2026. During the 2026 interterm, I had the opportunity to intern at Holy Nativity School in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. Holy Nativity is a Pre-K through sixth-grade elementary school tucked away in a small neighborhood that I call home. As an alumni of the school, returning as an intern felt both meaningful and full-circle. My role during this internship focused on classroom observation and teacher support across all grade levels, allowing me to gain invaluable insight into elementary education and child development.

As an aspiring speech-language pathologist, I initially struggled to determine the best environment to gain relevant experience. After spending two summers working as a summer school teacher, I realized that my skills and interests aligned best with a school setting. Since I attended Holy Nativity from kindergarten through sixth grade, I reached out directly to the headmaster to inquire about internship opportunities. This experience reminded me of the importance of networking and maintaining professional relationships, especially within communities that have shaped who you are.
Throughout my internship, I had the unique opportunity to observe each classroom for two days and meet weekly with the headmaster for reflection and guidance. My responsibilities ranged from assisting teachers during lessons to supporting students on challenging days. I was also given opportunities to actively engage with students, including helping lead English Language Arts lessons in third grade and working closely with younger students in kindergarten. Holy Nativity’s faculty fostered an environment where learning, patience, and compassion were always prioritized.
One course that strongly contributed to my success during this internship was Global Communication in the Workplace (COM 411). Concepts such as organizational culture, inclusive leadership, and positive workplace environments became tangible through my daily experiences at Holy Nativity. The school exemplifies an inclusive workplace model. Teachers, staff, and administrators work collaboratively, value each individual, and maintain a shared commitment to student well-being. Observing this in practice deepened my understanding of how communication and leadership directly impact organizational success.

What I learned from this internship goes far beyond what can be taught in a classroom. Observing teachers with decades of experience showed me that success is built through consistency and genuine care for others. Holy Nativity School provided a safe and inspiring learning environment that allowed me to grow both professionally and personally. I am deeply grateful for the mentorship I experienced, and I will carry these lessons with me throughout my academic and professional journey.
