The CES is pleased to announce that Chapman University student Ashley Hurlock, Master of Arts in Teaching: Secondary Science (Biology) Emphasis Program, has been chosen as winner of a $5,000 AFCEA Educational Foundation STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) Teaching Scholarship award for 2011.  This is the second consecutive year that students from Chapman’s secondary science/math teacher preparation program have been chosen for this honor.

The AFCEA (Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association) Educational Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to support development of engineers and technical personnel through selective motivational awards, prizes and scholarships, grants for educational activities of unique and high value, and professional educational programs.

The AFCEA Educational Foundation’s STEM Teacher Scholarship Awards is an annual competition that provides $5,000 scholarships to each of approximately 50 U.S. students actively pursuing an undergraduate degree, graduate degree or credential/licensure for the purpose of teaching STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) subjects at a U.S. middle or secondary school.

In addition to the STEM Teacher Scholarship, each graduating recipient, upon assuming a STEM teaching position in a U.S. middle or secondary school, is eligible to receive a $1,000 AFCEA Science Teaching Tools grant per year for three years, on the condition he/she remains teaching a STEM subject.  Click here for more information on this program.

Chapman University is the only California institution of higher education to have one of its masters degree students recognized for this distinction.  We are very pleased to have the qualifications of Ms. Hurlock, who will be completing her student teaching this fall, be recognized at a national level by the AFCEA.
