torres_originalDistinguished Professor, Dr. Rodolfo D. Torres joins the College of Educational Studies as a CES Visiting Scholar for the fall 13 semester.  During his time shared with the CES, he will teach a class titled Urban Schooling for Ph.D. in Education candidates and will be a special presenter for the Hassinger Chair Lecture Series to all CES faculty, students and campus community.  His topic will be titled, “Latino Education:  Economic Democracy and Radical Possibilities in the Age of Inequality.” He and Dr. McLaren, CES Distinguished Fellow in Critical Studies recently conducted a Brown Bag Community Conversation with CES faculty and doctoral students on “Politics of Publishing”.

Dr. Torres was born and raised in East Los Angeles He holds degrees from the University of California and Claremont Graduate School.  Currently, he is a Professor of Urban Planning, Political Science, Chicano Studies, and Culture and Theory at the University of California, Irvine, where he is also Director of Urban Studies. He is author and editor of 15 books, including Latino Metropolis and Savage State: Welfare Capitalism and Inequality. Dr. Torres is currently writing a book on anti-immigrant social movements in Europe and the USA to be published by Oxford University Press. He has also written over 60 articles and books chapters on urban theory, Chicano politics, politics of education, social theory, political economy, and ethnic and race relations. Dr. Torres is former Adam Smith Foundation Fellow at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, and recipient of several teaching and research awards.  A very warm welcome is extended to the Dr. Torres from Chapman University and the College of Educational Studies, faculty, staff and students.
