Why Do We Need Online Training?

Cyber criminals love to use phishing for identity theft, tax scams, and ransomware attacks! According to Forbes, phishing attacks targeting the Higher Education and Research Sector went up 75% in 2021.

Why? It is easier to learn how to trick someone into giving away their username and password than trying to exploit a vulnerability or “hack your way” inside a network. Hackers always look for the path of least resistance. Don’t let that be you!

Practicing good cyber hygiene is key to keeping your account safe.

What Does the Program Offer?

Chapman helps safeguard personal information and proprietary information through our Online Training and Awareness Program (OTA). This program is designed to inform, promote, test, and train our users to be more cyber secure.

The program consists of:

  • Seasonal Notifications & Newsletters
  • National Cybersecurity Awareness Month
  • Simulated Phishing
  • Instructor Lead Training

“1-2-3” Changes to Online Training and Awareness

Current: If a user enters username and password in an OTA simulated phishing email, they are automatically enrolled in a brief online training course.

Change: After talking feedback from senior management and the Chapman community, we will now incorporate managers into the communication for some of the online training courses. Managers have been requested to allocate time for employees to complete the requested training and increase adherence to training while keeping the university safe.

In-person personalized training is now being offered for users to address specific needs and answer and to get feedback from you!

Beginning on 4/1/2022, if a user enters their username/password in a simulated phish email, the following will occur:

Password entered once: Online training
Password entered twice: Online training and a notification to the manager
Password entered three times: An instructor lead training and a notification to the manager.

Note: Entering in user data within a 12-month rolling window will initiate the steps listed above.
