As autumn embraces our campus, we welcome Cyber Security Awareness Month, a time to unite and strengthen our digital defenses. Since its inception in 2004, this observance has become a cornerstone of our commitment to fostering a culture of cyber vigilance and resilience.
In my role as a Chief Information Security Officer at Chapman, I recognize the unique challenges and responsibilities we face. Our institution is not just a center of learning but also a guardian of a wealth of personal and research data. It is our duty to protect this information and ensure that our digital corridors are secure.
Simple Actions for Everyday Security
This year\’s theme for Cyber Security Awareness Month is \”Secure Our World,\” it\’s a reminder that security isn\’t a one-time setup but a daily practice. Here are four easy ways to enhance your online safety:
- Use Strong Passwords: Create complex passwords that are hard to guess. Consider using a password manager to keep track of them all.
- Turn On Multi-Factor Authentication (2FA): A password alone isn\’t enough. 2FA adds an extra layer of security to ensure you\’re the only one accessing your accounts.
- Recognize & Report Phishing: Be wary of unexpected requests for personal information. If an email or message seems suspicious, it probably is. Report these attempts to abuse@chapman.edu and keep your information safe.
- Update Software Regularly: Keep your devices secure by installing the latest software updates, which often include critical security patches.
