Chapman University Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) is pleased to announce the availability of Copilot for Web (formerly known as Bing Chat Enterprise), the enterprise offering ChatGPT-based generative AI technology from Microsoft. Keep reading for more details and a list of frequently asked questions.

Copilot for Web provides the benefits of a paid ChatGPT Plus subscription combined with data protection not available to individual users. IS&T is allowing information in the moderate tier of the data risk classification matrix to be used in Copilot for Web. As a reminder, all other public generative AI services are only suitable for the low tier per the published guidelines.

How do I get started with Copilot for Web?

Visit our Microsoft Copilot for Web for detailed steps on accessing Copilot for Web.

Who has access to Copilot for Web?

All full-time faculty and staff should automatically have the appropriate license to access Copilot for Web. Part-time faculty may request a license by contacting the IS&T Service Desk.

Note that students are not eligible for Copilot for Web but can access the full version of Copilot for Web, minus the data protection, by using a free personal Microsoft account.

What is the difference between ChatGPT and Copilot for Web?

ChatGPT was created by a company called OpenAI. Microsoft is a primary investor with an exclusive license to run the ChatGPT technology on their systems. Both run on Microsoft servers under the hood. Other differences include:

  • ChatGPT does not include newer data facts in its results, whereas Copilot for Web will search the web for more recent, relevant data.
  • The free version of ChatGPT runs a less sophisticated model (GPT 3.5 Turbo), whereas Copilot for Web includes the latest GPT 4 model when selecting the “Creative” option.

What about ChatGPT for Enterprise, Google Bard, or other commercial options?

IS&T will continue to assess new tools as they become available on the market.

OpenAI has put Chapman University on its waitlist for the ChatGPT Enterprise product, and we will assess their offering once they reach out to us.

Google Bard does not have an enterprise offering that provides data protection. Other workplace productivity tools, including Microsoft Copilot and Google Duet, will continue to be evaluated as they are released to the market.

Thank you,
