Dr. Philip Zimbardo

Dr. Philip Zimbardo

Dr. Zimbardo is one of this country’s most distinguished living psychologists, having served as President of the American Psychological Association, designed and narrated the award-winning PBS series, Discovering Psychology, and published more than 50 books and 400 articles and chapters. He is an award-winning educator, as well as professor emeritus at Stanford University.

We invite you to join us at noon on February 20th for his free guest lecture, “My Journey from Creating Evil to Inspiring Heroism”. Dr. Zimbardo will take the audience on a decades-long journey of research and experience: from his early years growing up amid violence in the South Bronx, to his notorious Stanford Prison Experiment, and to his current quest to inspire everyday heroism through the Heroic Imagination Project.

Due to the popularity of this lecture, it will be STREAMED LIVE for those of you who cannot join us on campus.

Dr. Zimbardo is probably best known for the 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment, a seminal  study of the relationships between guards and prisoners. The study remains a standard component of any psychology curriculum for its ground-breaking examination of behavioral responses to powerfully stressful situations. He was also an expert defense witness at the Abu Ghraib trials, and subsequently published The Lucifer Effect: Understanding How Good People Turn Evil, which synthesized his observations.

Among his many other research interests, Dr. Zimbardo is an expert on the nature of heroism.  In 2008, he founded the Heroic Imagination Project, an non-profit organization that studies and promotes heroism in everyday life.
