Dr. Kent Lehnhof
of the Chapman
English Department
spent his spring break this year in New Orleans, Louisiana. The city was full of tourists and revelers, but the big draw for Dr. Lehnhof was not the beignets and Bourbon Street but rather The Bard. He went to New Orleans to attend the 44th annual meeting of the Shakespeare Association of America. This meeting, which Dr. Lehnhof attends every year, brings together nearly 2,000 Shakespeare specialists for several days of plenaries, panels, and seminars. This year, Dr. Lehnhof participated in a seminar examining face-to-face encounters in the playwright’s works. (His paper, on Shakespeare’s great tragedy
King Lear
, can be found on

Mardi Gras Shakespeare

Although the SAA meets every year, this year’s meeting was special in that it fell within one month of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. To commemorate that anniversary in a traditionally “Nawlins” way, there was a jazz funeral for the Bard.

At
Chapman University
, the anniversary of Shakespeare’s death (April 23) will be commemorated with
a full weekend of events and activities
, culminating with
a production of The Merchant of Venice
at the brand new Musco Center for the Arts and a cake-cutting in the Atallah Piazza.
