Art Class Takes a Trip to Getty Villa
November 11, 2013
The Etruscan and Roman Art class (ART 386) took a trip to the Getty Villa on Saturday, November 9, 2013.
Professor Walsh led the group (which also included a Chapman alumna and the family of one student) around the collection. The Getty Villa was an ideal place for the class to visit for several reasons: the building was designed to recreate the ancient Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum, so students could experience what a real Roman domestic space was like; it includes the display of replicas of sculptures found at the ancient villa, in their original locations, so that visitors have the unique chance to see how an ancient art collector displayed his collection; and the Getty’s extraordinary collection of Roman art, of course, let students see many real examples of the works they’ve been studying in class.
