Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences and The Department of Art present Marc Horowitz and Petra Cortright from IRL Productions, in a lecture titled, “Can we Just Think of Something that is Just Automated” on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at 7 p.m. in Beckman Hall 401, as part of the Spring 2014 Visual Art Thinker Lecture Series.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Marc Horowitz graduated from USC with an MFA in 2012. Currently, his projects are in dialogue with a diverse range of subjects, including entertainment, advertising, the built environment, commerce and the quest for daily meaning. “In my own day-to-day, I am constantly making lists of potential inventions, neologisms, moneymaking schemes, jokes, drawings, websites, characters and impromptu videos. It is my hope that these projects speak to “the moment”: that they reflect and critique American idealism and expansionism – and parody pop culture so successfully as to become reappropriated by it.”
Born in 1986, Petra Cortright first gained notoriety as an internet artist but more recently has earned acclaim for the works she has exhibited in brick-and-mortar galleries. She has moved beyond just jpegs, websites and YouTube and has begun to incorporate elements of the online experience into her conceptual practice. Cortright’s work has been included in numerous group exhibitions including the Internet Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2009), the San Jose Biennial (2010), and the Biennale de Lyon (2013). She and her 2012 e-book, HELL_TREE were profiled with a Close-Up article by Bruce Sterling in the September 2012 issue of ArtForum. She has also had solo exhibitions at Club Midnight, Berlin and Preteen Gallery, Mexico City and currently has a solo exhibition on view at Steve Turner Contemporary.
