Writer-Producer Shaun Cassidy (Invasion, American Gothic and others) wowed the Prime Time TV Club and Prime Time: The Game of Television class members with a three-hour discussion on the ins and outs of being a top television creator. He talked about the importance of professionalism, of hard work, and of understanding how creative people must also recognize and address the business needs of the networks and studios they work for.
Also, much to the delight of Professors Ross Brown and James Gardner, Cassidy talked about how important it is for aspiring writers to read.
Cassidy openly shared details from his own life, including what it was like to grow up in a show business family (his father, Jack Cassidy, was a Broadway performer and his mother, Shirley Jones, is an Oscar-winning actress.) And Shaun was a teen pop music sensation himself, playing to sold out crowds in Madison Square Garden. His album was the #1 seller of its time.
But despite all the early acclaim he received as a singer, Shaun Cassidy is proudest of his accomplishments as a television writer. “I love television,” he said. “In television, I can create something and it goes from my head onto the screen in a few months. In feature films, it could be ten years for that to happen.”
All in all, another great night and another great guest for the Prime Time TV Club
