The world seems to be going crazy for Pokémon Go. We want you enjoy this great game, but at the same time please exercise caution and use the same safety tips that you would with any other campus activities.

Our Chapman public safety and information security teams have some safety tips below for you:

  • Some Pokémon will randomly appear in dangerous locations. Users need to realize when one is out of reach and not risk their safety to retrieve it.
  • Some Pokémon appear on private property. Users should not trespass for game playing purposes
  • Users can be overly focused on the screen and become oblivious to their surroundings.   Be aware of who and what are around you. Do not drive distracted.
  • Pokestops are certain focal points to attract more users. Predators can stake out at or near a Pokestop and commit crimes against other users.   This goes back to being aware of your surroundings. It is best to visit Pokestops at day time, with a friend or in a group.
  • Pokegyms are other prominent locations where users can meet and battle.  By design, you are there to meet and play against other users.  Again going in a group and being aware of your surroundings is a good strategy.
  • Be aware of phishers using Pokémon Go logos to send you malicious phish email about your Pokémon account. This will come to you as phish emails informing you about account resets or account lockouts asking you to urgently divulge personal information or download attached malicious files.

Our Chapman campus has plenty of public landmarks, fountains, statues, etc. that will attract many users from the general public onto our campuses.   Use the above tips and stay safe and we hope you catch many Pokémon!
