macOS Updates: A Little Patience Pays Off
September 17, 2025
Apple recently released new versions of macOS. While these updates often bring useful new features and enhancements, we strongly recommend that you avoid installing them immediately on devices owned by Chapman University.
Why we recommend waiting:
- Software compatibility risks: Many applications used for teaching, research, and administrative work may not be immediately compatible with the new operating systems. Vendors often take several weeks (or longer) to release updates that ensure their software functions correctly.
- Potential disruptions during the semester: If a critical app becomes unusable after an update, it could directly impact classroom instruction or important work processes. We want to avoid any mid-semester disruptions.
- Update prompts may still appear: IS&T actively works to delay major updates until after Interterm, when the impact on academic and administrative work is minimal. However, Apple frequently changes how updates are distributed and how blocks can be enforced. As a result, update notifications may still appear on your devices even though we attempt to delay them.
What you should do:
- If prompted to install a new macOS version, please postpone the update.
- Continue using your current operating system version until IS&T confirms that critical applications and systems are fully compatible.
We understand that updates can be tempting to install right away. However, waiting ensures your technology remains stable and reliable during the busiest parts of the academic year. By holding off until Interterm, you’ll help us minimize risks and ensure that the tools you rely on daily continue working without interruption.
If you have questions or need assistance, please contact the IS&T Service Desk.
Thank you for your cooperation and support in running Chapman University’s systems.
