International Love Data Week, hosted annually by the ICPSR (Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research) at the University of Michigan, celebrates everything and anything related to collecting, interpreting, and using data.

The 2025 theme for Love Data Week is “Whose Data Is It, Anyway,” which encourages researchers to reflect on where data comes from to promote its ethical and responsible usage. This year’s festivities will run from February 10 to February 14, 2025.

To encourage the Chapman University data lovers to participate in Love Data Week 2025, the Library Research and Data Services (LRDS) team has curated multiple activities to learn more about data resources and services across campus.

Attend the Love Data Week Open House

The Leatherby Libraries, in collaboration with the Office of the Provost, Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) Department, Institutional Research and Decision Support (IRADS) Office, and the Office of Research & Graduate Education, is pleased to present the Love Data Week Open House on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. This event is a part of Chapman University’s “Year of Data” Initiative, and you can learn more about Data at Chapman here.

“The Year of Data is all about making data accessible and a core part of everything we do. Love Data Week is the perfect event to bring people across the university together to celebrate and explore how data can drive our success.”

– Lauri Mantooth, Deputy Chief Information Officer, Information Systems & Technology

The Love Data Week Open House will have three timeslots featuring presentations focused on student success data, faculty research/data services, and data needed for daily operations. Presentations will take place in Argyros Forum 209A.

  • Student Data Session: 1:30 – 2:15 p.m.
  • Faculty Data Session: 2:30 – 3:30 p.m.
  • Administrative/Staff Data Session: 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

“Love Data Week is a great opportunity for every member of the Chapman University community to reflect on how they can better use data to inform their decisions and learn how to make that happen!”

– Marisol Arredondo Samson, Ph.D., Director of Institutional Research and Decision Support, Institutional Research and Decision Support (IRADS) Office

In addition to presentations, there will be a Love Data Week Tabling Session in Argyros Forum 209B, where researchers will have the opportunity to connect with departments on campus that provide data resources and services.

Register for a Love Data Week Library Workshop

Monday

Introduction to Dataset Searching

Join us Monday, February 10, 2025, from 10 – 11 a.m. for an introduction to finding quality datasets for your research needs. In this session, attendees will learn how to locate and evaluate datasets using a two-step process effectively: first, identifying potential datasets and then examining their content to ensure they include the required variables. Define what constitutes a dataset and a variable.

*This is a hybrid workshop. RSVP for online or in-person participation using this link.

Introduction to Research Data Management

Join us on Monday, February 10, 2025, from 2 – 3 p.m. to learn all about data and research data management. This workshop will introduce data management, including best practices for handling, describing, sharing, and storing research data to ensure it complies with funder mandates. Attendees will also learn about tools and resources provided by Chapman University that can help manage and share your data that will ensure it remains findable and useable in the future.

*This is a hybrid workshop. RSVP for online or in-person participation using this link.

Tuesday

Introduction to Data Literacy

Data Literacy is the ability to read, understand, create, and communicate data as information. Join us for an introductory workshop on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, from 10 – 11 a.m. that will outline and teach the skills needed to interpret data visualizations and statistics critically, understand data sources and structures, and create meaningful narratives from data. Attendees will receive hands-on experience working with data in Excel 365.

*This is a hybrid workshop. RSVP for online or in-person participation using this link.

ORCID for Researchers

Join us for a virtual workshop (Zoom) on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, from 12 – 1 p.m. to learn how to utilize ORCID iDs to increase the reach of your research. Getting and using your free ORCID iD can help save time and get credit for your work in funding, publishing, and research reporting workflows. This workshop will help you obtain an ORCID iD to allow easy identification when funding or publishing research, which is increasingly important as funding organizations, publishers, and research institutions increasingly require or ask for ORCID iDs from researchers.

*This is a virtual workshop. RSVP using this link; the event URL will arrive via registration email.

Writing Data Management Plans for Grant Proposals using DMPTool

By the end of 2025, all federal agencies that fund research will require a Data Management Plan (DMP) to accompany grant proposals for research funding. Some agencies, such as NSF and NIH, already require Data Management or Data Management and Sharing Plans. These documents outline the qualities of the data that will be collected, how it will be stored and protected, how and where it will be shared, and who will be responsible for managing the data.

Join us on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, from 2 – 3 p.m. to learn the basics of writing funder-required Data Management Plans (DMPs). Attendees will also learn how to use DMPtool.org, a resource that can help format, fill, and collaborate DMPs.

*This is a hybrid workshop. RSVP for online or in-person participation using this link.

Thursday

Cleaning Data from OpenRefine

Join us on Thursday, February 13, 2025, from 10 – 11 a.m. to learn about Open Refine, a free tool that analyzes, cleans, and structures tabular data. Attendees will learn what “messy” data is and how to “clean it,” how to open, explore, and transform a data set using OpenRefine, and more.

No prior coding experience is required, but participants are encouraged to bring their laptops to follow along and get hands-on experience using OpenRefine with our librarians. It is recommended that OpenRefine be installed before the workshop, which can be downloaded from here.

*This is a hybrid workshop. RSVP for online or in-person participation using this link.

Introduction to Data Literacy: Reading Data Visualizations

Join us on Thursday, February 13, 2025, from 2 – 3 p.m. to learn how to examine and understand data visualizations. Attendees will learn about common types of data visualizations, how to read them, examples of misleading visualization, and some simple rules for using or creating visualizations.

Friday

Creating Data Visualizations

Join us on Friday, February 14, 2025, from 10 – 11 a.m. to learn about guidelines and processes for creating effective data visualizations. Participants will learn about design principles, data visualization psychology, and common types of charts. Attendees will also have the opportunity to create data visualizations using a pen and paper or Excel.

*This is a hybrid workshop. RSVP for online or in-person participation using this link.

Visit the Leatherby Libraries Love Data Week Book Display

As part of our Love Data Week celebrations, the Leatherby Libraries has curated a selection of books from our catalog that explore data-related topics. This display includes titles highlighting fundamental topics in data, including collection methods, data visualizations, analytical techniques, and more. The titles included are valuable resources for researchers who want to learn more about collecting and utilizing data in their projects and papers.

The Love Data Week display will remain on display in the Leatherby Libraries’ First Floor Lobby through February. In addition to physical books, our team has curated a list of e-books featured in the display’s complete bibliography, which can be accessed here.

As we gear up for Love Data Week 2025, we invite everyone in the Chapman University community to take advantage of these opportunities to understand and utilize the vital role of data in research. Mark your calendars for February 10-14, and let us celebrate the power of data together!
