Communication is a fundamental element in the human experience. From prehistoric times to modern-day, communication continues to serve as an instrument in shaping public opinion and societal norms, it provides information about the state of the world and influences the way in which people perceive reality. The Communication Studies Department at Chapman University prides itself in making communication theory come alive for students, how it applies to the real-world and plays a powerful role in entertainment, education, government, history, art, politics, and beyond. Sometimes this requires students to step out of the classroom and experience education in a different cultural setting.

For this reason, Professor Michael D. Ross and Dr. Lisa Sparks will be offering a Travel Course during Interterm 2015 that explores the theme of Strategic Communications in Communist Cuba. This course is focused on how organizations and individuals – citizens, consumers, government, community and media- are able to communicate and negotiate their role in this unique political and cultural system.  Students will critically analyze political propaganda, experience first-hand the impact of highly regulated communication in different sectors of society, develop a deep understanding for the history of the country, and meet with Cubans from diverse field and backgrounds.

Group members will be visiting art galleries, engaging with community leaders, and enjoying authentic Cuban meals provided in private homes and paladres. Students participating in the Travel Course will leave Cuba with a memorable travel experience and a deep understanding of how communication functions in other societies.
