Acclaimed Israeli Poets Visit Chapman on March 3

is pleased to be hosting four acclaimed Israeli poets on Tuesday, March 3, 2015.
Please join us as we hear from
Shimon Adaf
,
Tal Nitzan
,
Haviva Pedaya
, and
Anat Zecarya
at 2:30 p.m. for a Poetry Talk in the J.E. and Flora Scott Wilkinson Founders Chapel in the Fish Interfaith Center.
Our guest poets will read brief examples of their work in Hebrew and English, discuss how poets think about language–sound, syntax, meaning–and explore the role of translation in contemporary literature, followed by a Q & A, moderated by Tziona Shamay.
At 7 p.m. that same day, our special guests will honor us with Poetry Reading from their work in Argyros Forum, 209. Once again, the readings will be followed by a Q & A.
About the Poets and Moderator:
Shimon Adaf
is the author of six novels and three books of poems and was the winner of Israel’s prestigious Samir Prize for his novel,
Mox Nox.
He worked as the literary editor at Keret publishing. He has won Israeli Ministry of Education Prize, the Yehuda Amichai Prize, and the Prime Minister’s Prize and has been a writer in residence at the University of Iowa. He is currently the head of Creative Writing Program at Ben Gurion University.
Tal Nitzan
is a poet and one of Israel’s most respected translators. She has translated poetry by Lorka, Paz, and Borges and prose by Toni Morison and Angela Carter and has received honorary medal from President of Chili for her translation of Neruda. She has also written children’s books. You can find her peace activist work in the anthology
Israeli Poets of Protest.
Haviva Pedaya
is the winner of the President’s prize in Israel. She works as a professor at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev, where her research covers Jewish mysticism from Hekhalot literature. She established the Ensemble for Mystical and Liturgical Music.
Anat Zecarya
is an outspoken young poet who writes about desire and was twice awarded Poetry in the Streets Prize. Also known as a dance critic, she is the author of two books, the most recent of which is published by Bialic Institute.
Tziona Shamay, Moderator
is the director of
Helicon Society for Advancement of Poetry in Israel
. She has created various cultural forums and exchanges with international literature festivals.
