The Department of Art
is hosting the
Visual Thinker Lecture Series
with Pilar Tompkins Rivas on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at 7 p.m. in Argyros Forum 209A.

Tompkins Rivas specializes in US Latino and Latin American Contemporary Art and has been an arts professional since 2002. She has organized dozens of exhibitions throughout the US, Colombia, Egypt, France, and Mexico. She has also worked as curator and director of artist-in-residence programs at 18th Street Arts Center, the arts project coordinator at the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center, and curator of the Claremont Museum of Art.

In 2017, the Vincent Price Art Museum (VPAM) will mark the institution’s 60-year anniversary, with a mere five years in its current 40,000 square foot building. The focus of this lecture will consider VPAM’s future as it seeks to fully realize the transformation of the museum from a hidden gem to a vibrant and dynamic institution that not only serves our immediate surrounding community, but which also serves as a leader in the arts nationally and beyond. In this new chapter, VPAM is committed to growth through presenting groundbreaking exhibitions, expanding public programming and special projects, building its collections, and connecting with the public on new digital platforms. This talk will include an overview of VPAM’s fall exhibitions including Tastemakers & Earthshakers: Notes from Los Angeles Youth Culture, 1943 – 2016, Beatriz Cortez: Nomad World, and Peter Wu: Rise of the Fly II, a discussion of the museum’s programmatic rationale, and a detailed look at the director’s vision for transforming the institution.
