Maggi Owens always smiles when she sees Ross Escalette coming. That’s because the Chapman University curator knows if it weren’t for a substantial gift from the Lido Island businessman and philanthropist, she’d be out begging collectors and artists for anything they could spare. Owens had managed to amass a respectable library of works for the school through the generosity of the late Newport art collector David Steinmetz, Corona del Mar-based artist Tony DeLap and others. Taking whatever she could get, however, often meant getting prints instead of the originals she coveted.
