You are Invited to attend “Maximizing Student Learning and Professor Motivation to Teach”, a workshop and conversation with colleagues and noted college teaching scholar, speaker, and author, Maryellen Weimer, on Friday, January 24, 2013 in Argyros Forum 209A at 9 a.m. (check-in at 8:30 a.m.).
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:Maryellen Weimer, facilitator of all three sessions, has edited The Teaching Professor newsletter since 1987 and writes The Teaching Professor Blog. She is a professor emerita of teaching and learning and former Director of Faculty Development at Penn State. Dr. Weimer received Penn State’s Milton S. Hershey award for distinguished teaching in 2005. Dr. Weimer has published many books, including Learner-Centered Teaching: Five Key Changes to Practice (Jossey-Bass, 2002) and Inspired College Teaching: A Career-Long Resource for Professional Growth (Jossey-Bass, 2010).
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
8:30 a.m.: Check-in and coffee
Morning Session: 9 a.m. – noon
The Morning session is especially for mid- and advanced-career professors interested in refreshing their outlook on and approach to teaching.
PROMOTING CAREER-LONG GROWTH FOR TEACHERS
Join us to learn how to make instructional changes that energize teaching and promote learning, and leave with your own growth-focused change plan. Content for this session is drawn from Maryellen Weimer’s book, Inspired College Teaching: A Career-Long Resource for Professional Growth.
Lunch Keynote: 12:15 – 1 p.m.
Open to all faculty, instructors, and graduate teaching assistants.
WHO’S RESPONSIBLE FOR LEARNING?
Over lunch, we’ll consider ways to create conditions that motivate students and engage them, and strategies for holding them responsible for learning outcomes (while promoting positive attitudes about the learning experience).
Afternoon Session: 1:15 -3:30 p.m.
Open to all faculty, instructors, and graduate teaching assistants.
MAKING CLASSROOM INTERACTION MORE EFFECTIVE
Join us for an interactive session during which we revisit and evaluate favorite instructional strategies, and learn new ideas for making instructor/student and student/student classroom interaction more effective.
