This spring, a new wave of college grads—the Class of 2025—is stepping into the workforce. They’re arriving with fresh expectations, digital fluency, and a strong sense of identity. To the industries welcoming Wilkinson College students: get ready. Gen Z is here, and they’re redefining what it means to work.
Here are the top 5 reasons why Gen Z stands out—and how to thrive alongside them.
1. Digital Natives Who Still Crave Connection
Gen Z grew up with smartphones and TikTok, but that doesn’t mean they want to work alone. In fact, they crave connection in new ways. They bring strong tech skills and adapt quickly to new platforms, making them ideal for fast-paced, digital-forward environments. But beyond their tech savvy, Gen Z deeply values mentorship, frequent feedback, and meaningful relationships at work. They thrive in environments where learning is continuous, feedback is consistent, and leaders guide without micromanaging.
Career Tip: Create or seek out a culture of real-time feedback—even a quick “Great job!” on instant messaging makes a significant impact.
2. Bold Ideas and a Willingness to Challenge the Norm
Gen Z isn’t afraid to ask, “Why are we doing it this way?” They’re creative, courageous, and bring fresh perspectives—especially in branding, workplace culture, and social impact. They speak up, even in entry-level roles, and expect inclusion and representation at every level of leadership. When given a voice, they use it to push organizations forward.
Career Tip: Don’t wait—pitch your ideas and take initiative. Set up a brainstorming session. Be the one who starts the conversation.
3. Clear Boundaries and a Focus on Well-being
Forget hustle culture—Gen Z values autonomy, results-driven work, and protecting their personal time. They prioritize employers who understand that rest fuels productivity and flexible structures equal growth. Companies that provide clarity, respect boundaries, and encourage development (without micromanaging) are the ones that will win their loyalty.
Career Tip: Look for employers who offer learning opportunities and respect work-life balance—you’ll thrive in environments that empower and trust you.
- Salary Transparency and Smart Benefits
Gen Z is financially informed and not afraid to negotiate. Financially savvy and hyper-aware of inflation, cost of living, and industry benchmarks, they’re not shy about asking, “I need to be paid fair market value.” In my HUM class, Gen Z has learned that nothing is more important than their market value. These students know their worth and research pay scales online. They expect competitive compensation, not just promises of “experience.”
Career Tip: Don’t just focus on salary—compare benefits like PTO, healthcare, mental health resources, and growth opportunities. Sometimes the best offer isn’t the highest paycheck.
5. Driven by Purpose, Not Just Profit
More than any generation before, Gen Z wants to make a difference. They care about the impact of their work on communities, the environment, and each other. They’re drawn to mission-driven companies that align with their values and allow them to contribute to meaningful change.
Career Tip: Research whether a company supports volunteering, sustainability, or community programs. Work means more when you know you’re part of something bigger.
