What is gender identity? Gender identity refers to a person’s internal sense of self in regard to their gender. This may be the same or different than the sex they were assigned at birth. Personal pronouns are parts of speech that are used to refer to a person in substitution of a proper name. When referring to a person, one should use pronouns that correspond to the gender identity of that person. Individuals can provide us with the pronouns that should be used when referring to them.

As of Fall 2024, students can update their gender identity and pronouns in the Student Center. These pronouns are visible to the faculty on the class roster in the Faculty Center. Students’ pronouns are also passed on to Canvas and can be seen by faculty and other students on the class roster. Efforts are ongoing to integrate this information into other academic systems to ensure a consistent and respectful experience across all platforms.

Chapman University has made use of the following gender identities available for students:

  • Woman
  • Man
  • Nonbinary
  • Transgender Woman/Trans Woman
  • Transgender Man/Trans Man

The pronouns that have been approved for students at Chapman University are as follows:

Please note that changes to legal gender in the University systems requires proof of a legal change of gender/sex. In California, legal gender markers include Male, Female, and Nonbinary.
