Chapman University’s Art Department is proud to present Joy Division – Spring 2013 Departmental Student Exhibition, Monday, April 29 – Friday, May 3, 2013. As a survey of the art departments creative powers this exhibition includes more than 200 works by Chapman Art and Graphic Design Students.

The gallery is divided by a black line into two sections one of which contains the works that were accepted into the exhibiton. The other side showcases the work that didn’t accumulate enough votes from the art departments faculty to get into the show.

By exhibting the work together in the same space the viewer is given the opportunity to reconsider the jurors decision and approve it or disagree with it. Joy Division understands itself as both a lighthearted, but bittersweet revelation of missing qualities as well as a critique on the decision making process which assigns value to a piece of art or withholds it.

Come all to the opening! Decide yourself what belongs on which side of the line and discuss your thoughts over a bowl of stew and a cup of wine. Support the artists and see who will win the awards and celebrate the creativity found in Chapman’s Art Department.

Opening reception is Monday, April 29, 2013 at 5 p.m. at the Guggenheim Gallery.
