Don Barrett (B.A. Communication ’64), founder of laradio.com, is joining the Orange County Register as radio columnist.

Barrett succeeds Gary Lycan, who passed away on April 9 after battling prostate cancer. Lycan served as radio columnist for the Register for more than 40 years. He was well-known and well-liked among readers and the radio industry as a preeminent expert on news relating to Southern California’s airwaves.

Tributes have poured in for Lycan as news of Lycan’s passing spread last week. Longtime readers who never met Lycan felt like they knew him, and many appreciated the pet advocacy work he did throughout his career.

Friends gathered for a Celebration of Life for Lycan at the Register’s headquarters this morning, of which Barrett attended.

“To follow the late Gary Lycan is a privilege and a responsibility that I will not take lightly,” Barrett said. “I am humbled to be Gary’s successor. To join the OC Register as the radio columnist is indeed an honor.”
