Thirty full-time faculty are invited to participate in a new professional development opportunity this summer, June 21 – June 25. We are offering a new program called the ‘IETL Diversity Infusion Summer Institutewhere faculty will be challenged over a week-long period to orient their thinking in creating equitable and diverse courses and effectively incorporating diversity into their curriculum.

Faculty interested in this opportunity are encouraged to submit an application by Friday, May 14, at 5 p.m. Applicants who are chosen to participate in this opportunity will be notified by the end of the semester. Please note that you will need to log into Google Drive to complete the application as there is a file upload component.

Our intention is for this to be in a hybrid format with some in-person and virtual meetings. We know we can’t plan for every contingency but our plan is to hold the June 21 and June 25 session in-person on the Orange campus from 1 – 3 p.m., unless CU Safely Back protocols dictate otherwise, while June 22 – June 24 will be held virtually from 2 – 5 p.m. We ask that applicants consider this when applying. We anticipate that about 2 hours of pre-work will be required before each meeting time. For faculty who are not available during this week, please know that we are planning additional programming around this topic.

The week-long institute will be conducted in a cohort-model and led by an Instructional Designer who has much experience and helpful insight into this field. Concurrent with live discussions, participants will be enrolled in a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) through Cornell University called ‘Teaching & Learning in the Diverse Classroom.’ Content will address things like:

  • A framework for inclusive course design and related resources
  • Strategies and exercises helpful in facilitating discussion and modeling inclusivity when unexpected issues arise
  • Opportunities to reflect on the implications of social identities — both students’ and instructors’— within the teaching and learning environment
  • A showcase of evidence-based learning strategies
  • A framework for evaluating a course syllabus from a diversity perspective
  • Skills to communicate effectively with students across differences in challenging situations
  • Action plans for future endeavors
