Erin Berthon, MA Career Advisor, Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, at Chapman University

Are you a first-year student still struggling with what you want to do, or even questioning what your major can do for you? Are you unsure of how to build a professional resume, or wondering if an internship will help you? Are you a senior that is starting to panic about graduating and feeling lost on what happens after commencement? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then I have just the class for you!

Wilkinson College’s “Leading Your Life, Managing Your Career” is a one-unit course with sections available during interterm and spring, and it will be taught by me, Erin Berthon, Wilkinson’s Career Advisor.

This is not your ordinary class, instead, it will function more like an interactive workshop. This class will prepare you, whether you are a first-year student or a senior, to graduate feeling confident and ready to embark on your career path. My hope for this class is that it will help you develop a variety of networking tools and master your interviewing skills.

Each week will focus on a different aspect of career preparedness. For instance, you will participate in an informational interview activity, take a fun personality career assessment, and you will learn the secrets of Linkedln. The best part is that you will become a more motivated and self-directed learner when you understand the relationship between your academics, potential career paths, and the need to plan ahead and set goals.

Why is this important? Career education and career development are good for students! The more you learn about your transferable skills and interests, your future career options will become more apparent to you. Not to mention, no one likes to be caught unprepared. Overall, the career course will enable you to think critically about your goals and career choices. Why not do that in a class that will provide all those tools in a comfortable and fun environment?
