The Department of Art is pleased to be hosting Leslie Geddes as part of the
Visual Thinker Lecture Series on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at 5 p.m. in Moulton Hall, 213.

Geddes will present, “Leonardo on Water”

Proto-scuba divers and walkers on water offered the possibility of gaining a new kind of access to water’s depths. Water preoccupied virtually every artist-engineer in the early modern world. Their fascination demonstrates how artistic and technical invention was predicted upon an understanding of the natural landscape’s variability and instability. Water also presents one of the most challenging problems in visuality due to its formlessness, clarity, and mutability. This talk examines how Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) and his peers addressed a fundamental problem of representation. These pictorial challenges pertain to the limits of vision and consequently how one renders what one sees and knows. Leonardo’s artworks ultimately lead to pressing inquiries into artistic representation as a generator of ideas.
